How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal is a medical procedure that uses laser technology to break down the ink particles in a tattoo, allowing the body's immune system to gradually remove the ink over time. Here's a detailed overview:

How It Works

  1. Laser Technology: High-intensity light beams (lasers) are targeted at the tattooed area. Different types of lasers are used depending on the color of the ink and the depth of the tattoo.
  2. Ink Fragmentation: The laser energy is absorbed by the tattoo ink, causing it to heat up and shatter into smaller particles.
  3. Immune System Response: The fragmented ink particles are then absorbed and eliminated by the body's immune system, specifically by white blood cells called macrophages.

Tattoo Removal FAQs

  • How many sessions will it take to remove my tattoo?

It's hard to say how many sessions it will take as everyone will lighten at different rates.

The main factors in lightening rate are:

    • Colour(s) of tattoo. Black ink lightens faster than white.
    • Depth of pigment. Deeper ink will take longer to come out. Some of the signs that your ink is deep is scarring (raised and a bit shiny) and blowouts or shadows around the tattoo.
    • Saturation. This is how dense the colour is in the tattoo. The denser it is, the more time it will take to come out.
    • Where the tattoo is on your body
    • Your skin tone (for laser method)

Even with all of these factors taken into consideration, it's impossible to tell how many sessions it will take as everyone lightens differently.

With that being said, there's no need to book for more than one session at a time.

  • How long do I need to wait in between sessions?

It's best to wait at least 6-8 weeks in between tattoo removal sessions. This gives your skin enough time to fully heal.

  • Is saline removal safe?

Saline removal involves tattooing a super concentrated saline solution into the tattoo.

This is done in a tattoo shop with very strict hygiene regulations. All of our equipment is disposable and never re-used.

The saline solution is all natural. It contains no acids, no harmful chemicals or other yucky stuff.

Saline removal typically leaves no scarring, no blisters or burns. It is even gentle enough to use on eyelids!

  • Is saline tattoo removal suitable for all skin types & skin tones?

Saline tattoo removal can be used on all skin types and skin tones.

A patch test is recommended for anyone with darker skin tones to rule out developing hyper or hypo pigmentation.

  • How long is the healing process after tattoo removal?

It will take several days for the scab to come off. Most fit and healthy people will shed the scab within the first week. Sometimes it may take longer.

Once the scab comes off, your skin will be a bit pink. This will gradually go away over the next few weeks.

Sessions can be done every 8 weeks.

  • Are there side effects of saline tattoo removal?

Most people will have redness, puffiness and soreness after the treatment. It may feel like a bad sun burn. This usually goes down within a few hours.

The treated area may be red for several days.

  • Does saline tattoo removal work?

    Yes, it does.

In fact, saline tattoo removal is great for those hard colours that laser struggles with. And it doesn't matter how old the tattoo is,

Traditionally laser has always been used for tattoo removal, but saline works too. Best yet, you don't get all of the yucky side effects that you get with laser removal.

Tattoo removal takes several sessions-no matter which method you choose.

  • What are the side effects of tattoo removal?

The area that was treated will be red and there will be localised swelling. This usually subsides over the next few hours.

Hypo or hyper pigmentation may occur and so it's recommended to get a patch test if you have a darker skin tone.
